What the picture shows

You look into a large aquarium tank lit blue and violet. Orange sea nettles with ribbed bells, ruffled cream arms and thin red tentacles hang among pale moon jellies, each moon jelly marked with four faint rings. Four big nettles sit at the upper left, the top centre, the lower left of centre and the bottom right, with smaller ones further back. The largest moon jelly fills the top-right corner. Through the glass, the dark outlines of visitors stand in a band across the middle, in front of a softly lit room.

Solving Jellyfish Bloom

At 50 and 100 pieces no piece is plain, and orange bells, pale moon jellies and blue water sort the board between them. From 200 pieces up the moon jellies start to match, each piece a pale curve with part of a ring, and tentacle pieces become a few red threads on blue. By 1000 pieces about 1 piece in 4 is plain, mostly blue gaps and the dark band of visitors.

Place the four big sea nettles first, following each one's arms and tentacles as far as they go. Then the large moon jelly in the top-right corner and the other big ones near the middle. Build the band of visitors next; it gives the board a horizon. Add the smaller jellies of both kinds by size, and leave the open blue for last.

Jellyfish Bloom is the easiest ocean picture at 100, 500 and 1000 pieces, and at 100 about 5 pieces in 10 have a near-twin, against about 7 on Tide Pool. At 50 pieces Coral Reef and Tide Pool sort better, and at 200 Coral Reef does. Its weak spot comes late: by 1000 pieces it has the most plain pieces of the five, the blue gaps between the jellies.
