About 9 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Almost every piece has something on it.
Par is the time your score is measured against at that size. The rest is measured from the picture itself: how many pieces have a near-twin by colour once it is cut.
What the picture shows
A rock pool at low tide, with clear water running from the bottom centre back toward a strip of sea and blue sky at the top left. Dark rock rises on both sides, crusted with black mussels, pale barnacles and pink coralline. Orange and purple starfish and round green anemones lie in the pool on a bed of pebbles. A small crab sits on the rock on the right beside a tangle of brown kelp.
Solving Tide Pool
At 50 pieces the starfish, anemones and water stand out from the rock. From 100 pieces up the rock takes over: mussels, barnacles and pink crust repeat on both sides, and about 7 pieces in 10 have a near-twin. Nothing here is plain. Even at 1000 pieces fewer than 1 piece in 20 lacks detail of its own.
Build the pool first. Its clear water and pebbles are the smoothest part of the board, and the starfish and anemones in it are easy to place by colour. Then the crab and the kelp on the right. Work the rocks outward from the waterline, telling the sides apart by what covers them: mussels low on the left, barnacles high on the right. The strip of sea and sky at the top left is last.
Tide Pool is the hardest ocean picture at 100 pieces, about 7 pieces in 10 with a near-twin, and at 50 pieces only Coral Reef sorts better. From 200 pieces up it falls back: Sea Turtle has more look-alikes at every larger size, and Clownfish Anemone at 200 and 1000. Plain water is never its problem: it has no plain pieces up to 200 pieces, and at 1000 it ties with Clownfish Anemone for the fewest.
