Rose Garden Jigsaw Puzzle

A formal rose garden with a white gazebo, a fountain, hedges and a bench. Roses in every colour behind clipped hedges. Ordered in the middle, wild at the edges.

Gravel paths and hedges make a grid: build it first and the rose beds are boxes to fill. The gazebo is the only white lattice.

Rose Garden at every size

PiecesParWhat it is like
50 piecesabout 7 minutesAbout 3 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Almost every piece has something on it.
100 piecesabout 17 minutesAbout 6 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Almost every piece has something on it.
200 piecesabout 41 minutesAbout 7 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Almost every piece has something on it.
500 piecesabout 2 hoursAbout 8 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Almost every piece has something on it.
1000 piecesabout 5½ hoursAbout 9 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Almost every piece has something on it.

Par is the time your score is measured against at that size. The rest is measured from the picture itself: how many pieces have a near-twin by colour once it is cut.

What the picture shows

A formal rose garden in evening light. Tall green trees fill the back under a pale blue sky. Right of centre stands a white wrought-iron gazebo with a domed top, covered in pink and peach climbing roses, with a small table and chairs inside. A two-tier stone fountain stands on the left with a wooden bench beside it. Low clipped hedges box in beds of red, pink, yellow and peach roses, and gravel paths lead in from the bottom edge.

Solving Rose Garden

Nearly every piece has petals, leaves, hedge or gravel on it, and fewer than 1 piece in 10 is plain even at 1000 pieces. The difficulty is repetition. Beds on the left and right use the same rose colours, and at 200 pieces about 7 pieces in 10 have a near-twin. The gazebo, the fountain and the bench keep their shapes at any size.

Start with the gazebo; its white ironwork is unlike anything else. Then the fountain and the bench on the left. Lay the gravel paths next, from the bottom edge inward, and add the hedges along them. Each bed is now a box with known edges: fill one at a time, splitting them by rose colour. The trees and the sky go in last.

Rose Garden is the easiest flower picture at 50 pieces, with about 3 pieces in 10 that have a near-twin. From 100 pieces up Cottage Garden sorts better, and from 200 Tulip Fields edges ahead of it as well.
