What the picture shows

A lioness lies right of centre with her front paws stretched toward you and her head turned to look off to the right. A green acacia bush fills the top right. Two cubs sit upright on the left, facing you, one of them chewing a long stick. Behind them a tall termite mound of red-brown earth rises on the left, and a vehicle track runs back across dry grassland to flat-topped acacias on the horizon, under a pale strip of sky. A fallen grey branch lies across the bottom right.

Solving Lion Pride

At 50 pieces about 7 pieces in 10 already have a near-twin, because the lions, the grass and the dust are all the same tawny brown. The faces, the green bush, the termite mound and the grey branch stand apart at any size. At 200 pieces about 9 in 10 have a near-twin, and by 1000 nearly every piece does. Under 1 piece in 10 is plain even at 1000 pieces.

Start with the faces: the lioness, then the two cubs. Follow each body down from its face, using the stick to tell the second cub from the first. Build the acacia bush in the top right next, the only large patch of green. Then the termite mound, the track and the horizon. Place the fallen branch at the bottom right, and fill the dry grass across the bottom last: sharp stalks at the front, softer grass behind.
