What the picture shows

Fireworks over a small harbour town, seen from a hillside at night. Four bursts fill the top in a row, gold, red, green and gold, inside drifting smoke lit pink. Pale stone houses with terracotta roofs climb a hill on the right, with a church, its bell tower and old fortress walls among cypresses. Along the waterfront, cafés under white umbrellas and string lights are full of people, with palms and motorboats along the quay. On the left lie an open bay with sailing boats, a small rocky island and distant hills. Yachts with tall masts are moored in the bottom left, behind dark trees.

Solving Harbour Fireworks

At 50 pieces only about 2 pieces in 10 have a near-twin: each burst has its own colour, and the town is full of lit windows, roofs and boats. The count jumps to about half at 100 pieces, when sparks and pink smoke start to repeat. Plain pieces stay rare, about 1 in 7 at 1000, mostly the dark water of the bay.

Start with the church and its bell tower, then the fortress walls above them. Build the waterfront next: cafés, palms and the boats along the quay. Do the four bursts from their bright centres outward, then the red and green streaks in the water below them. Add the houses on the hill, the bay, the island and the yachts, and leave the pink smoke for last.

Harbour Fireworks is third of five in the holiday set from 100 pieces up, harder than Balloon Fiesta and Carnival Night but easier than the two warm-lit scenes, Halloween Night and Lantern Festival. At 50 pieces only Balloon Fiesta sorts better.
