Balloon Fiesta Jigsaw Puzzle

Hot-air balloons inflating on a launch field at sunrise, crews holding them open. Five giant envelopes filling with air, close enough to see the seams.

Each big balloon has its own pattern: chevrons in the middle, black-and-white checks at the right edge, small coloured squares on the yellow one. Sort by pattern; the plain sky is what remains.

Balloon Fiesta at every size

PiecesParWhat it is like
50 piecesabout 7 minutesAlmost no piece has a near-twin at this size. Almost every piece has something on it.
100 piecesabout 17 minutesAbout 3 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Almost every piece has something on it.
200 piecesabout 41 minutesAbout 5 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Most pieces carry some texture.
500 piecesabout 2 hoursAbout 6 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Most pieces carry some texture.
1000 piecesabout 5½ hoursAbout 8 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Large runs of flat colour.

Par is the time your score is measured against at that size. The rest is measured from the picture itself: how many pieces have a near-twin by colour once it is cut.

What the picture shows

A launch field just after sunrise. A patchwork balloon in yellow, red, green and blue lies on its side on the left, its mouth ringed in black, with crew holding it open. A blue balloon with coloured chevrons stands upright in the middle, a yellow one with small coloured squares inflates on the right, and a black, white and purple checked one is cut off by the right edge. A wicker basket lies on a blue tarp beside an inflation fan and a lit burner. Pickups and a white trailer stand behind, spectators line a rope hung with pennants at the bottom right, and five small balloons float in a pale sky above mountains.

Solving Balloon Fiesta

At 50 pieces fewer than 2 pieces in 10 have a near-twin, the fewest of any picture in the collection at that size. Each balloon's pattern points to one envelope, so it stays the easiest holiday picture up to 500 pieces. The cost is plain colour: big single-colour panels and the pale sky go flat, and by 1000 pieces about 3 pieces in 10 are plain.

Start with the basket, the fan and the burner on the tarp, and the crew around them. Then the chevron balloon and the checked one at the right edge. Build the yellow balloon, then the big patchwork on the left, using its black band. The pickups, the trailer, the spectators and the pennants come next. Place the five small balloons, and leave the plain sky and grass for last.

Balloon Fiesta is the easiest board in the holiday set up to 200 pieces; Carnival Night draws level at 500 and passes it at 1000. From 100 pieces up it also has the most plain pieces of the five.
