What the picture shows

A small lake fills the middle and lower right of the frame, turquoise and rippled by wind. Above it a grey peak streaked with fresh snow rises at the top centre, with lower snowy peaks to the left. On the right a steep slope of grey boulders runs down to the water, dotted with dark spruces and yellow larches. On the left, larches and spruces crowd the far shore, and a tall yellow larch fills the top-left corner. Big lichen-covered boulders cross the bottom, with a green and a navy backpack leaning on them at the lower left. In the bottom right the water is clear enough to show stones on the bed. The sky is grey overcast.

Solving Alpine Lake

At 50 pieces about 4 pieces in 10 have a near-twin, the fewest among the mountain pictures. The lake is what changes with size. Its middle has little detail, so by 1000 pieces about 1 piece in 6 is plain, the most of the five. The backpacks, the peak and the yellow larches stay easy to place however small the cut.

Start with the snowy peak at the top, then the boulder slope on the right down to the water. Build the larch shore on the left and the big larch in the corner. Place the two backpacks and the boulders along the bottom. Then the lake: each band of reflection sits below the thing it reflects, yellow under the larches and grey under the slope. The clear water with stones in the bottom right and the grey sky come last.

Alpine Lake is the easiest mountain picture at 50 pieces. From 100 pieces Green Hills passes it, and the lake stays second of the five at every larger size as its open water goes plain.
