What the picture shows

Solving Mountain Village

At 50 pieces about 6 pieces in 10 have a near-twin: the chalet, the church, the cows and the tractor stand out, but meadow and forest fill most of the frame. At 100 it jumps to about 7 in 10, as meadow pieces lose the cows and flowers that told them apart. By 1000 pieces nearly every piece has a near-twin, and about 1 in 8 is plain, mostly cloud.

Start with the church and its spire, then the big chalet on the left by its geraniums. Place the tractor, the barn and the hay bales on the right, then follow the road up from them past the car. Add the other chalets and the stone wall. Place the three cows next, and fill the meadow around them by its flowers. Then the forest slopes and the cliff, and finish with the peaks and the cloud.

Mountain Village is the second easiest mountain picture at 50 pieces, behind Alpine Lake, but from 100 pieces up it is one of the two hardest: about 7 pieces in 10 have a near-twin at 100, against 5 on Green Hills. At 500 pieces it passes Glacier Trail, and at 1000 the two are level.
