About 9 pieces in ten have a near-twin at this size. Most pieces carry some texture.
Par is the time your score is measured against at that size. The rest is measured from the picture itself: how many pieces have a near-twin by colour once it is cut.
What the picture shows
Excavated stone ruins under a bright summer sky. The top half is deep blue with heavy white clouds. A long, high wall of pale stone runs across the middle, with trees in front of it on the left and right and a few modern buildings showing above it at the far right. Below, low walls and foundations mark out the rooms of old buildings, with grass and weeds growing between them. A wooden walkway with a rail runs along the right, a small metal stand sits on the left, and loose rubble lines the bottom edge.
Solving Ancient Ruins
At 50 pieces the clouds are the easy part, each with its own outline against strong blue. The stone is harder at every size. Every wall is built from the same pale blocks, so from 200 pieces up most stone pieces have a near-twin somewhere else in the ruins. Shadows fall the same way on every wall, which tells you which way a piece faces.
Start with the long back wall, the one straight line that crosses the whole board. Put the trees and buildings on it next. Then trace the low foundation walls toward the bottom edge, following each line of blocks from one corner to the next. The grass between them fills in after. Leave the sky for the end, and place clouds by their shape before the plain blue.
Ancient Ruins sits in the middle of the castles and towns set, between second and fourth easiest at every size; at 1000 pieces Canal Houses and Temple Garden both edge ahead of it. About 9 pieces in 10 have a near-twin at 500 and at 1000. Old Town Square, the easiest, has about 4 in 10 at 50 pieces where the ruins have 6.
